TESTOSTERONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Testosterone therapy (TRT) has been the center of controversy for many years now, with many scientists and physicians weighing in on the pros and cons. This often misunderstood course of treatment has shown to be very effective at treating the symptoms of hypogonadism or male menopause in otherwise healthy individuals.

What is testosterone treatment?

Testosterone treatment, also known as testosterone replacement therapy, is a catch-all term for hormone therapy that consists of injections or other forms of supplemental testosterone. TRT is a medical treatment used to help eliminate symptoms in males (and some females) who have lower than average T-serum levels.

Physicians prescribe TRT to reverse the symptoms associated with hypogonadism like low libido, low energy, increased fat deposits, loss of muscle tone, and brittle bones. It can also be prescribed as a treatment for andropause, a hormone imbalance that occurs in older men (sometimes called “male menopause”).

Why testosterone treatment?

TRT can be a beneficial treatment for andropause in otherwise healthy men over 30 years of age. Research has shown that men begin to experience dips in testosterone levels around age 30. The gradual reduction in hormone production goes unnoticed by some, but others may begin to feel the unpleasant side effects that accompany low T.

TRT is not recommended for men who have a history of heart attacks, heart problems, enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, or those at risk of developing prostate cancer.

The physicians at OAK HEALTH INSTITUTE complete a full physical assessment before hormone therapy is considered to make sure each patient is healthy enough for TRT.

What kind of testosterone treatments do you offer?

Typically we administer Testosterone therapy via intramuscular injection because it’s more efficient and allows us to monitor dosage more easily. In some circumstances, we can prescribe topical gels and creams, but these are usually only recommended for men who need low-dose TRT.

For patients who only need a smaller or more incremental testosterone supplementation plan, we at OAK HEALTH INSTITUTE are also able to provide low-dose TRT plans. When it comes to dosage, we can create a customized testosterone replacement therapy regimen for individual patients.

What kind of results can I expect?

Testosterone has a widespread effect on almost every organ system in the body. Men report better sexual function, heightened libido, higher energy levels, enhanced mood, better concentration, and increased muscle mass just to name a few.

TRT has been shown to have cosmetic benefits as well, including the promotion of hair growth, particularly in the beard area, weight loss, and an increase in muscle tone. Interestingly, studies have shown the weight lost by men receiving TRT is almost exclusively fat and that men taking TRT lost on average nearly six more pounds than those who relied on diet and exercise alone.
